Heritage building becomes a destination workspace

Global engineering consultants, Cundall selected Manchester’s Fourways House as its new city headquarters. A heritage, Grade II-listed building and former packing warehouse, Fourways was selected for its ideal location in the heart of the Northern Quarter and the authentic character on offer with its original timber floors, steel columns and exposed brickwork.

During the early stages of the pandemic, it became clear that the world of work was about to change. In November 2020, a staff survey revealed that most employees favoured working from the office two to three days a week. This shift in working patterns was a significant consideration throughout the design process as their new space had to support these new needs and requirements.

After viewing several spaces guided by Savills, Fourways House was a clear favourite. Following a competitive tender process, DENTON was appointed to deliver the complete fit-out and furnishing of the space to create a new home to support their future of hybrid working.

A design that enhances the existing features and reflects the company's brand values

It was important that the heart of the space had an open, welcoming feel for both staff and visitors. A design that enhances the existing features of the building and reflects the company’s brand values and sustainability ambitions.

The team created a welcome area featuring a large bespoke kitchen island and a mix of casual social spaces at the centre of the office that naturally drew in visitors and employees to encourage social interaction. A bright, fresh, social space for Cundall to host their popular events and town hall meetings. Dynamic meeting areas contain a mix of private rooms with creative acoustic solutions, including bespoke joinery feature walls. Last but not least, focused workspaces with plenty of comfortable seating, a sociable breakout area for casual meetings, and, of course, a great coffee!
